Role in the film and musical[]
This city is where Annie lives her entire life since she was a baby. Her parents said that one day they will claim her, with the other half of the locket. Despite this promise, her parents died in a fire, making Annie live in a miserable New York City orphanage along with other girls. In the song, Maybe, Annie stares out into the New York Skyline at night and sings about how she wishes her parents would come and get her, unaware that her parents are already dead. She escapes from the orphanage the next day and runs about runs the rough New York City streets until a police officer returns her to the orphanage. She is soon after invited to spend Christmas with one of New York City's many billionaires, Oliver Warbucks, who later adopts her. He takes her on a tour of New York City, including an ice cream shop, a concession stand, a department store, a toy store, and a Broadway show. While on the tour, they sing a son called, NYC, which is all about their love of New York.
The lyricist and director of the musical Annie, Martin Charnin, said that he wanted to make a New York City musical, and Annie is that. The city is a major influence on the plot and atmosphere of the plot, and it tells a very American story.
